A message from the Lewiston Area Chamber of Commerce

The current economic difficulties have affected many of our local businesses and has hit home with the Lewiston Area Chamber of Commerce as well. This year’s events saw a decline in participation and revenue. As a result, the income for 2008 has suffered while operating expenses remain at a fixed rate.

The Chamber Board of Directors began addressing the issue earlier this fall responding with a reduction in Chamber office hours from thirty (30) to twenty (20) to offset expenses. As the budget process continued, the Board decided not to borrow funds or prematurely use funds designated for 2009 in order to meet the remaining 2008 expenses. This resulted in the decision to reduce the office hours for the next few months to weekends only and to staff the office with volunteers.

This decision will assist in keeping the Chamber on track financially to start the year and remain viable throughout 2009. The Chamber is solvent and has funds to meet fixed expenses for the remainder of year. The Board of Directors has worked diligently to formulate a balanced budget for 2009 and looks forward to the annual meeting/installation dinner in late January (date pending) to present the new budget and revised by-laws for approval.

This is a time for rebuilding and the Board of Directors looks forward to a new and improved Chamber of Commerce. We are working on 2009 events to bring visitors to our community. We are very excited to announce that a Business After Hours Social is being planned for early January. A new format and schedule for the newsletters is being reviewed and the membership directory will sport a new look by early spring.

The Chamber will continue to support local businesses and visitors through volunteer services, e-mail and the Chamber web-site. It is our goal to staff the Chamber Office with regular office hours and personnel by the end of the first quarter 2009. Ideas for the reorganization will be presented at the annual meeting.
